Colombo University

University of Colombo is the oldest university in Sri Lanka, located in the capital city of Colombo. The motto of University is “Buddhi Sarvatra Bhrajate” in Sanskrit, which stands for “Wisdom Enlightens” thus, the university strives to maintain academic excellence in all areas of study. Being one of the best South Asian Universities, it offers Under Graduate and Post Graduate degree and diploma courses in various faculties. With a proud and commendable history of 115 years dating back to 1921, the University still continues in its attempt in maintaining its position as “Capital University, Modern and International in Outlook and Character”.

The University has seven faculties, forty three departments, a campus (Sree Palee Campus), a school (School of Computing), six Institutes and several Centers and Units offering several Under Graduate and Post Graduate degree and diploma courses in various areas of specialization.

Intake to the various basic degree courses are through University Grants Commission (UGC). It is based on the performance of students at the GCE Advanced Level Examinations, where intake to the Post Graduate courses are based on norms and criteria set by different faculties under the University. Applications for admission from eligible candidates are invited through a notice published in press on forms provided for the purpose by UGC.

Faculties in the University of Colombo

The University of Colombo has seven faculties, each of which maintain distinct Departments offering various courses of study for students. The faculties of the University are:

Faculty of Arts

With nine academic departments and several teaching units it is the largest faculty in the University of Colombo. Along with undergraduate courses, the departments under faculty of arts also offers Masters, PhD degrees and diploma courses in various disciplines.
  

Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law at university of Colombo is the only faculty concerned with law in the entire university system of Sri Lanka. In addition to Bachelors Law degree it offers Masters, M.Phil and PhD degrees.

Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education plays a major role in the national education advancement. In terms of enrollment in full time post graduate studies it is the largest under University of Colombo. It has made remarkable contributions in the areas of teacher education and higher education. Along with under graduate and post graduate programs it offers a Diploma in Global education for teachers that forms a part of the global school partnerships program.

Faculty of Management and Finance

Started as Department of Commerce and Management studies under the faculty of Arts in 1979, owing to the growing needs of the students and the Sri Lankan business community, it was established as Faculty of Management and Finance in 1994. It still remains as the growing faculty of the University of Colombo. Further,  it reached another major historical juncture in May 2007 by establishing six new departments and abolishing the two existing departments. Catering to the current trends in corporate sector, two new academic programs were also introduced, namely BBA in International Business and BBA in Management and Organization studies.

Faculty of Medicine

Established in 1870 the Faculty of Medicine serves as a pioneer in the field of Medical Education, it has been a leader in medical training and research, not only in Sri Lanka but the whole of Asia. The Faculty offers various under graduate and post graduate programs in addition to overseas elective program and external and extension programs.

Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science at University of Colombo offers comprehensive and diverse under graduate and post graduate education programs for students who wish to pursue advanced studies in science streams. It is the largest Science faculty in Sri Lanka having seven departments.

Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS)

It is one of the leading post graduate institutions in Sri Lanka. FGS Colombo promises a bright professional future with a diverse range of post graduate study programs in Applied Social Sciences, Business Studies and International Affairs. Further, with state of the art educational techniques, the programs at FGS are designed to equip the students to meet the challenges in future.


Sree Palee Campus

The western campus of the University of Colombo was established in 1996 and later its name was amended as Sree Palee Campus in 1998. It is located in the Kalutara district at Wewala, Horana. The land and buildings were donated to the university by Sree Palee trust and hence the name came into use.

The campus has two faculties namely Faculty of Performing Arts and Faculty of Mass Media. The only department under the faculty of Performing Arts is the Department of Performing Arts in which Music, Dance, Drama, Theater, Screen Studies, Art and Design are taught, whereas the Faculty of Mass Media have three departments under it namely Department of Mass Media, Department of Languages and Department of Information Technology. Currently the Department of Mass Media alone is fully functional and the other two departments are operating as Language Unit and Information Technology Unit.

Students are enrolled to the various courses in Sree Palee campus based on their z-scores in Advanced Level Examination. The annual intake of the campus is nearly 150.


School of Computing (UCSC)

University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) was established in 2002 by merging the institute of Computer Technology and Department of Computer Science under the University. It is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka, which started as a center for higher learning in Computers, so as to equip students to prepare for successful careers in the field of Computers and Information Technology.

The campus offers various under graduate and post graduate courses along with several training and online programs. It has three academic departments and several centers imparting quality education to students in various disciplines, with the aid of modern infrastructure and advanced lab facilities.


Institutes at University of Colombo

The various institutes under the University of Colombo which facilitates students in pursuing post graduate courses and quality research are:

Institute of Biochemistry Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IBMBB)

It is a post graduate training institute focusing mainly on MSc, MPhil and PhD programs. The major objective is to provide training in molecular life sciences for the national development. Click Here to for more information on IBMBB

Institute of Indigenous Medicine (IIM)

It is the premier higher educational institute in Sri Lanka providing instructions in Ayurveda, Unani and Indegenous system of medicine at under graduate and post graduate levels. It was first started as college of Ayurveda and later affiliated to the University as Institute of Indigenous medicine in 1977. Click Here for more information on IIM

Institute of Human Resource Advancement (IHRA)

The Institute of Human Resource Advancement strives to be the center of excellence in advancing human resource for peace and development.  IHRA currently offers 5 Postgraduate Degree Programs up to Masters Level, one Undergraduate Degree (i.e. BLE) 2  Executive Diploma Programs, 11 Diploma Programs, and around 18 Certificate Courses. Post Graduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM)

It is the only institute in Sri Lanka that provides special training to Medical Doctors. The institute works in close collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Health, Faculty of Medicine in Colombo University and several professional colleges. National Institute of Library and Information Science (NILIS)

The NILIS was established in 1999 with a purpose of providing post graduate and general training facilities in Library and Information Science field with a special attention to school/teacher librarianship.. University of Colombo Institute of Agro Technology and Rural Science-Hambantota (UCIARS)

The institute was set up with a view to “uplift farming in Sri Lanka as a prestigious occupation through arming the farmers community with modern knowledge and information technology.” The institute offers e-Diploma in Agro Technology and Higher Diploma in e-Agro Technology along with an e-Degree in Agro Technology. Research and Innovation at the University

With a strong commitment towards research and innovation, the academic community in various disciplines engage in high quality research, relevant both internationally and locally. The university also highly encourages the research aptitude of students by providing them with research grants, awards and prizes.

Scholarships to Students

The University offers scholarships to meritorious international students for Masters and PhD studies. The total number of scholarships stands to 100.
