Faculty of Education at Colombo University

In 1949 a department of Education was set up in University of Colombo (the then “The University of Ceylon”) and it was elevated to faculty status in 1973 and conferred upon the name “Faculty of Education”. The Faculty of Education plays a major role in National Education advancement of Sri Lanka. In terms of enrolment in full time post graduate studies, it is the largest faculty under University of Colombo. It has made remarkable contributions in the areas of Teacher Education and Higher Education.

Furthermore, along with under graduate and post graduate programs it offers a Diploma in Global Education for teachers who form a part of the global school partnerships program.


Academic Departments in Faculty of Education

By 1975 the faculty of education had 4 departments under it offering several undergraduate and post graduate programs. Read below to get an insight on these departments:

Department of Science and Technology Education (DSTE)

The key concept of DSTE is “Theory into practice”, upon which it strengthens the Education process by knowledge development and imparting training to graduates as professionals and initiating undergraduates to the field of education. Department of Humanities Education

Being an active operational body, functioning with a broad perspective, the department significantly contributes to the National Educational System. It is done by creating professionals to teach English and aesthetic subjects in schools, as well as Higher Education sector.

Furthermore, the department gives special attention to improve the quality of school Education in Sri Lanka. It department offers two Post Graduate Diploma courses and one Masters Degree programs  in different specializations.

Department of Social Science Education

The thrust area of the Department of Social Science Education is development of talented teachers and creation of applicable knowledge, attitude and skills in order to maximize social and economic dominance through education.

Department of Educational Psychology

The Department of Educational Psychology works keeping with a mission of developing a professional with expertise in human behaviour, committed to scientific study and ethical practice in their area of expertise. Its main research and teaching areas are Educational Psychology, Education Measurement and Evaluation. The courses offered by the department are:
  •  Bachelors (special degree) in Education
  • Masters Program in Education and Developmental Psychology
  • Post Graduate Diploma courses in Educational, Psychological Assessment and Counselling.
MPhil and PhD programs are also offered by Department of Educational Psychology in area of Education.

In addition to this, the other thrust areas of the department are
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Educational Guidance
  • Counseling
  • Educational Statistics.

National Education Research and Evaluation Centre (NEREC)

A Research Centre was established in 2000 under the Faculty of Education, with an objective to be engaged in research to provide advice to education planners. Educational testing, evaluation and trainings are its other functions. The center caters to the local and foreign requests in the field of education.
