Faculty of Management and Finance at University of Colombo
Owing to the growing needs of the students and the Sri Lankan business community, Department of Commerce and Management studies was established under the faculty of Arts in 1979. It was transformed to the present Faculty of Management and Finance in 1994 and still remains as the growing faculty of the University of Colombo. The faculty reached another major historical juncture in May 2007, by establishing six new departments after abolishing the two existing departments. Catering to the current trends in corporate sector, two new academic programs were also introduced, BBA in International Business and BBA in Management and Organization studies.
Departments under Faculty of Management and Finance
There are six departments functioning under The Faculty of Management and Finance that provide with different courses and fields of study. These are:
Department of Accounting
The Department of Accounting was established in 2007. The main objective is to produce employable graduates to serve as business executives in the field of accounting in national and international markets. The major highlight of the department is the BBA Accounting (Special) Degree program.
Department of Business Economics
The Department of Business Economics commenced its functioning in 2006 with two major courses,
BBA (Special Degree) in Business Economics and International Business. This department contributes a fair share towards the economic development of Sri Lanka, by producing high quality, well trained employable graduates. It also strives in conducting high quality research and in the dissemination of knowledge.
Department of Human Resource Management
From the time of its establishment in 2007, this department is making all efforts to train under graduates in order to fulfill the need of HRM field of the nation. The major course of study offered by the department is BBA in HRM specialization degree program.
Department of Management and Organization Studies
The Department of Management and Organization Studies was established in 2006 along with other five departments. It is a creative, innovative and collective force contributing its share in transforming the world of business through the development of competent man power. The department conducts both BBA (Special) degree for the entire Faculty and BBA Degree in Management and Organization Studies. Thus, it plays a dual role as a service department and as a department that offers specialized courses in Management and Organization Studies.
Department of Finance
With a history dating back to the 1980’s, the department of Finance plays a dual role, as a service department and as a separate department offering various specialization courses in finance. The department conducts a BBA in Finance Special Degree Program which provides an innovative curriculum to the students.
Department of Marketing
The Department of Marketing is known for its high commitment in providing academic excellence through interactive teaching and learning. Main objective is to equip students with in-depth knowledge of marketing and innovative skills. The department offers both under graduate and post graduate programs of study for the students namely,
BBA and MBA in Marketing.
Courses offered by the Faculty of Management and Finance
The Faculty of Management and Finance offers 4 year special BBA Degree Program in various disciplines under different departments of the faculty. The Faculty also offers MBA, which is well a recognized program offered among Universities in South Asia.
An EMBA program is also offered by the Faculty of Management and Finance. It is intended for senior managers and executives and built in a flexible way to facilitate learning through variety of teaching methods, workshops and integrated seminars.
