Sri Palee Campus of Colombo University
The western campus of the University of Colombo was established in 1996 and later its name was amended as Sri Palee Campus in 1998. It is located in the Kalutara district at Wewala, Horana. The land and buildings were donated to the university by Sri Palee trust and hence, the name was kept.
It has two departments namely, Faculty of Performing arts and Faculty of Mass Media. The Faculty of Performing Arts has only one department in which Music, Dance, Drama, Theater, Screen Studies, Art and Design are taught. On the other hand, Faculty of Mass Media has three departments namely Department of Mass Media, Department of Languages and Department of Information Technology. Currently the department of mass media alone is fully functional and the other two departments are operating as language unit and information technology unit.
Students are admitted to the various courses in Sri Palee campus based on their z-scores in Advanced Level Examination. The annual intake of the campus is nearly 150.
Academic Departments at Sri Palee Campus
As mentioned above, the Sri Palee campus has two departments:
Department of Mass Media
The Department of Mass Media offers innovative
- Post Graduate programs
- MA in mass media studies (2 years), and
- Post Graduate Diploma in mass media studies (one year)
- Diploma course in Radio and Television Journalism
These programs are conducted in close collaboration with research and journalism organizations in the South Asian region.
The Department of Mass Media also consists of three Units, which are:
Information Technology Unit
Established in 1999 this unit offers courses in computer studies to all undergraduates as a service course. The unit also offers short term programs like, certificate course in graphic applications.
The Language Unit
The language unit was set up to enhance the communication skills of undergraduates catering to the needs of the fast growing global community. English, Tamil and Hindi languages are taught by this unit.
Audio Visual Unit
A Diploma course in radio and television journalism is offered by the audio visual unit.

Department of Performing Arts
The Department of Performing Arts offer a 4 year special degree in Performing Arts. It radically breaks away from conventional special degree programs on account of its “contemporary-ness”. It is done by creatively responding and relating with contemporary socio-cultural and technological contexts, as well as new trends and discourses in the field of performing arts. Admission to special degree courses at Sri Palee Campus

Research at Sri Palee Campus
The campus maintains a Research Center for Media Research (CMR) since 2011. Main concern of the center is on the impact of media on contemporary society and how the media can serve the communal interest and development policies at national and international levels. Currently the center provides research publications and gives the undergraduates a basic knowledge on research.
Library at Sri Palee
The library and information services were initiated in the campus in 1999. Presently with a collection of about 19,000 books and nearly 20 journal titles, it is moving up the ladder to become full fledged by adding 1,000 to 1,500 materials to its stock every year.
